Dylan Shearer is authentic, with that special, inherent, know-it-when-you-hear-it quality rarely found in musicians.  His voice has a subtle smokiness and moves at its own pace, allowing each word to roll out of the mouth with undeniable impact and ease.  His style is reminiscent of the earthy quality of Jimmie Spheeris, whose calm but commanding voice would reach into the listener and manipulate their sensibilities.  His unique talent is undeniable.

But Shearer embodies restraint, as well.  On “Afterwhile,” his first single from Porchpuddles, Shearer isn’t just set to impress.  Rather, he is content with presenting beautiful melodies and simply gliding along with them.  In a musical landscape littered by shouts for attention, Shearer turns his back and crafts music that is seemingly simple, yet deceptively powerful.  “Afterwhile” would certainly play nicely as the backing soundtrack for any contemplative moment in a film where characters consider the struggles of life.  The magic isn’t on the surface; it’s in the depths – sink in and let Shearer take over.
